Gear Progression

Primary hand - The magic staff from the wizard in the tent on the beach (magic beads drop 100% from the big crab in the cave on the west side of the beach)

Offhand - torch (drop from goblins or fletch from coal and stick)

Starter equipment - wizard hat from wizards in the cave west of Mudwich that looks like a sunken house.

The beach tent wizard sells staves that require higher magic levels that are better up until the ice staff. The first magic set is the sapphire set that drops from Pretas in the volcanic mines of Patsow, NW of the ladder to the Skeleton King's area.

Other than the cheese staff from Mr. Cheese of Mudwich, the next weapon upgrade is the Bluemoon Staff. These drop from ice wizards in the crystal cave of Duhvic, requiring the defeat of Santa to get to.

The frostbite set (best-in-slot armor, legs, and boots) drops from Blue Pretas. Several blue preta can be reached without unlocking Duhvic The cave in the SE corner of Lakesworld contains three of them. One is a kind of mini-boss, but is no stronger than the other two. This is because it reveals a chest upon defeat, more loot than the blue preta alone. The chest does not offer additional chances to drop Frostbite armor, but it does drop other desirable items. When threatened from afar (arrows or magic), Blue Preta are known to retaliate with ice attacks to freeze their opponents, doing extra damage and reducing overall speed stats. Close combat melee avoids the freeze effect.

As for accessories, sapphire gold ring and sapphire gold pendant are pretty good. They drop from bosses besides goblin king, ant queen, ogre lord, and skeleton king. The best magic accessories are the pumpkin accessories from the 2023 Halloween boss.

After the bluemoon staff—in ascending order of power—the demonic staff drops from ant queen, the sunshine staff drops from pirate captain, and lvl69 staffs drop from squid (blood, solar, chaos), orc lord (chaos wand), and frost queen. The best staff, requiring 90 magic to wield, is the witch's staff of the moon It also drops from frost queen, and very rarely from frozen bats.

For hats, a better mage hat that looks like a "?" drops from Santa, the royal crown drops from skeleton king, and the frozen crown drops from frost queen.

For back armor, black wings drop from hellhound, and frostfire wings drop from frost queen.

For offhand, a lantern drops from squid with better damage, arcan lantern from dragon is even better, colossal shield from orc lord is just fine, and shield of glory from frost queen is probably best overall.
